Dr. Rush: One of the benefits of having a background in pediatric orthopedics and also sports medicine is that you understand the growth plate and you're able to avoid injury to the growth plate during surgery. A really good example is is ACL tears and ACL reconstruction. So in a young patient, a 9,10,11,12 year old, those patients still tear their ACLs just like 17,18,19 year olds. But when those patients have an ACL injury, you have to think about surgery a little different, because they have that growth plate that's still growing. When we do our reconstruction. We do it in such a way that we avoid damage to the growth plate, because it really doesn't do any good if you reconstruct the ACL, but then they have growth problems down the road. So in my younger patients, we do things like iliotibial band ACLs, or IT band ACLs or all appendiceal ACLs, which is where we keep the ACL away from the growth plate to avoid damage.
