My dad, who restores paintings, pointed out that scrubbing or peeling off varnish is a bad idea since it risks damaging the paint underneath. Often, the paint is very old and has lost moisture over time, leaving it cracked or loosely adhered to the canvas. The best method is to use a gentle solvent that gradually dissolves the varnish but is not strong enough to harm the paint.

I’ve always heard tht the scraping and peeling methods r bad cuz they can pull up n damage the paint under the varnish

Scraping the old varnish off with a palette knife is always so unnerving to me. I prefer a solvent, but I know sometimes it's better to do it the other way 😅

Whenever I see an art restoration video, I just remember Mr. Bean attempt to restore the famous painting in the movie😂
