How Sunrise Banks Built a Symmetric Multi Cloud Architecture with Terraform & Vault

This is a story of how at Sunrise, we used a symmetrical architecture pattern with Terraform Cloud to construct a globally scalable cloud presence in Azure/AWS.

We discovered that the key to rapidly deploying our multi region infrastructure presence in the cloud is by creating mirror images of our Vnets/Vpcs and our subnets across global datacenters and identifying persistent structures from ephemeral assets during Day 0 Deploy. When an organization's cloud presence is designed this way it allows for IAC, in our case Terraform Cloud to rapidly provision symmetrical copies of our datacenter across the globe at will - a multiverse of clouds - all connected via regional hubs of the provider's global backbone and back to our HQ and branch offices.

Terraform Cloud's Module management and versioning system provided the stability we needed as we scaled rapidly with this pattern and continues to provide the guardrails necessary for our continued cloud expansion. The patterns and practice allows us to destroy and recreate not just individual assets such as VM or K8S clusters but entire clouds across regions.
