You forgot the biggest reason for testing 1RM - It feels GOOD to hit those big numbers... as long as it's done safely.

This may be a good space to mention 1RM estimators.

For those curious about their 1RM but concerned about safety, online algorithms can estimate it fairly precisely from your set/reps numbers.

Old school Bulgarian weightlifting: "What do you mean not maxing out 1 rep? Need to do twice a day!"

For me at least, I don't do 1 rep maxes but I do 2-3. My normal is 10 reps, but I love seeing what I can do in the 2-3 range because it often makes me realize I can push harder than I have been.

Helped so much for tricep pushdowns. Was doing 10 reps at 75 pounds which was okay, but then one day decided I would just try for 3 at 110 pounds and I managed to actually hit 5.
I stuck at around 100 pounds and then worked my way up from 6 reps to 10 reps pretty quickly. Don't do anything stupid with free weights, but also don't be afraid to push yourself every once in a while!

My thoughts exactly. I've never done a 1RM in 9 years of going to the gym.

I got so much stronger when I started focusing on being strong over maxing lifts.

Thank you for this, doing things that you enjoy doing in the gym is so underrated. Like I struggled to go to the gym consistently for years after I got medically retired from sport. About a year ago i realised that the fitness content i was consuming was obsessed with the most perfectly optimal way to grow muscle which aligned with neither my goals (get stronger) nor what i enjoyed doing (moving heavy weights). I’m in a place now where I recognise that calling 1RMs “ego lifting” is bullshit because i’m not doing it for my ego, im doing it to have a good time and as a form of therapy. And ive never been more consistent in the gym than over the last year and gotten much stronger. This week I hit a pr 155kg squat 1RM and a 100kg C&J 1RM which are numbers I haven’t even touched since I was playing sport but more importantly i’ve actually been consistently working out 3-4 times a week for most of the year

1rm test then six week strength program then retest, repeat. Makes perfect sense to me.

I train regularly ... And do it around 6 - 12 reps for 4 sets.

I don't need to risk my body for PR, because i'm not an athlete, and i don't have plans to be an olympic powerlifter or olympic weightlifter.

I just train for my health, keep my body fat low, and maintain muscle and bone density.

My aim is for an Aesthetic body ... Thats it.
