The Rapido Trains UK APT-E quick overview.

A look at the APT-E in DCC ready guise set up and run on my DC section of layout. The model will get chipped at a later date but as I'm not a big fan of DCC sound I didn't think that version worth the extra expense even though it still works out cheaper than Hornby's 5 car set.

If you have a DC version and later chip it for DCC to get the front and rear light working on F0 the following CV’s need setting..

CV 33 for forwards needs to be set to 9, that is 1=front lights white + 8=rear lights red.
CV 34 for backwards needs to be set to 6, that is 4=front lights red + 2=rear lights white.

Other function buttons can be set to 16 front cab light that will go of in reverse. 32 rear cab light but this will stay on regardless to direction until I find another setting.

The APT E looks so futuristic, even for this day. Looks to be a great model. Thanks for sharing.

In reply to @Lee Marshall who's comment doesn't seem to appear here although I got notification, yes the train does need to be assembled on track as you can not lift it once fully assembled. Thanks for watching if you see this.

That overhang of the nose worries me because much of my scenic work is done and the risk of damage to it and the train appears substantial. Moreover, on a double track layout there seems to be a risk of collision/ scuffing/ derailment. So, given your experience, what clearances would you advise if measured from the track centre (to spend £300-400 on a possible mobile wrecking machine could be folly). I’m considering buying this model, but your valuable video has given me pause.

How easy was it to get the body off, mine is making a horrible squeaking sound and I don’t want to send it back because I live in the states. Thanks

Does this model tilt like the Hornby APT set?
