Today at Ewetopia Farms, in follow-up to our episode on sheep shearing, I will discuss wool and how it has evolved over the centuries to the industry we have today. In layman's terms I describe how the value of wool has changed and whether there is money to be made in it now. I will talk about the history of wool as I know it, types of wool, qualities of wool, and more. We would love for you to become a daily visitor to our working sheep farm in Joyceville, Ontario, Canada and become an honorary Ewetopian! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!!! I learned a lot and found it very interesting!! It is a shame that such a sustainable product isn't utilized more but competing with cheaper products is just a losing battle I guess. Our world continues to move towards "greener" more sustainable products being "fashionable" so I'm cheering for the wool to make a comeback!!😁🙏 Again thank you for sharing your farm and knowledge with us!!! Your hat and scarf are beautiful!! Stay safe!!

I would love to have a big chunky sweater made from it! It's too bad wool isn't as popular anymore, Thanks Lynn for teaching us about wool.

I am hopeful that wool will have a comeback because it is sustainable AND can be harvested ethically (without harming or killing the animals)

The US Military used to make all their uniforms out of wool because it's a natural fire retardant . Years ago we had a wool pool, and we got the best price after we joined. It used to be the shearer would shear sheep for the wool.

Enjoyed your video and all the great information. We raise Icelandic Sheep in Eastern Ontario, and it is always great to find others doing similar things. We only raise them for our needs at the moment, but sheep creep is a real thing just like chicken math lol. Thank you for sharing

I love this video, right up my alley! I'm looking at property now and would love just have a back yard fiber flock, probably ewes and wethers. Shetland, Finn, and maybe an East Fresian to milk eventually and process the ram after. I don't eat lamb but my son and friend love it. I spin, knit and weave, just getting into dyeing and processing raw wool.

Thank you so much for all of this information. My cross-bred half-Jacob ewe is the most friendly. She absolutely loves to come up and get hugs. She's a big floof-ball of wool. I can bury my hand in her wool. Most of my full-jacob ewes have a much tighter fleece (and are less friendly to being handled).

It's too bad that the cost of getting shearers isn't at least balanced out by the proceeds from the wool.

In our difficult times, it's good to have sheep in case, as my 81 year old dad would put it, the world goes to hell in a handbasket. A renewable resource, and a pleasure to have around.

I've seen the shetland in several of your videos and wondered if she was a shetland. She looks mighty fine for that age!!! My oldest ewe is 4 and doesn't look that good.

The two hopes for the future of wool are as insulation for homes and as a mulch product. They can make wool felted mats that will work as mulch and slowly breakdown to feed the soil. The insulation products are similar in R value and the way they are used as fiberglass batts are.

How many of y’all had this nursery rhyme going through y’all’s head? 🤣
Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full;
One for the master,
One for the dame,
And one for the little girl and boy
Who lives down the lane.
Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full.
I did 🤦‍♀️. Thank you so much Lynn for this insight into wool and a glimpse into your background with said wool. I found it extremely interesting and actually very sad that our lives don’t include more of this real natural resource that we have. Side note: hopefully babies and momma’s are starting to quite down for you today 😂. That has to be very stressful for all involved. Especially y’all’s ears. 😊🐑💜
