You left out one important reason: STABILITY. I can’t tell you how many hours I lost to my old editor crashing.

The magic of Resolve is that the free version is so darn good. It gets you hooked. The next natural step is an upgrade to studio.😊

One thing that is worth pointing out about why DaVinci Resolve is taking off is because the wider ecosystem of design tools now has competition. Creatives needed Photoshop and Illustrator for stills, so why not get the whole suite of video and audio creation tools for a little bit extra? Blackmagic owes a lot to Serif for making Affinity Photo and Designer. And now Left Angle released Autograph to fill the gaps that DaVinci Fusion didn't fill for motion graphics. There's no longer any financial incentive for multi-discplinary creatives to stick with Adobe. Even whole agencies are switching tools, so the argument about Adobe being the industry standard is starting to fade as well. So, it's not just the price of one piece of software. Everything is changing, and it's glorious. :)

Grant Petty has a good vision for his company.
And I really like his way of presenting new stuff on their channel.
He is a cool guy.

That's why I don't like too much when people include premiere (or any software you have to rent) when they say : use what's best for you... Nah, we should push people to support those who do good things.

After over 4 years of making YouTube videos with the free version, I've finally shelled out the £306 for the full version. It gets the 4k rendering done much quicker, and the 10-bit video can be useful too, allowing me to take in full quality files from Digital Betacam tapes for example.

With zero experience in video editing when I started, I never could figure out the Cut page 😂 (and never open it other than for changing some dynamic zoom settings)
I wish BM would add some more youtube friendly features like auto caption transcript and some other gimmik effects as in CupCut

Times have changed, programs are being given out for free to achieve new users. The juicy add-ons or upgrading to the full version once you get familiar with the program, makes the money.

Fortnite, the game for example, has made insane amounts of money by providing the game for free but charging for skins and other upgrades.

Premier needs to get with the times. (And also improve the programs stability)

I've been using DR since 2020 and never ever needed to search for another video editing software again!

I think the number 1 reason davinci is becoming a massive success is simply because blackmagic is listening to user feedback and acting on it.

I absolutely love the Cut Page, especially in combination with the Speed Editor. Saves hours of editing for each video I make.

I'm glad I made the jump from Adobe's products to BMD Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio! Life is so much better with them. Everyone I've shown have all made the jump too. Channels like yours are also the reason why I look Resolve Studio so much because everyone is out there to share gleaned/gained knowledge from using the two programs. Of course, I also have some BMD hardware I want to eventually pickup once they get beyond the drool factor (for me) and into my workflow factor. Thank you for sharing as always!

I love DaVinci resolve it’s one of the best video editors available. I’m not a content creator I use DaVinci solely for creating home videos of my grandchildren for their pleasure in future. Currently I use the free version but am seriously considering studio purchase hopefully to enable more GPU options! Personally if I were to offer a critique it would be the paid version offering support/updates for life mean life and not changed to subscription like some others have done.

Just a side note, I always thought that you come off as a very likable person. That's a quality I don't possess so I can appreciate it when I see it.

I used free for years, and would still be until they introduced ai upscaling in Studio. Love the other Studio features now, of course. But free version is fantastic. Glad it's catching on, it deserves it. It's not just cheaper than Premiere, it's better!

I got the Studio Lic when I bought the Speed Editor - BOGO Free! :). Also love the backhanded slap at Subscriptions - I hate them.

All excellent points, Alex, and, as always, thank you. For me, a raw beginner, coming from one of the paid consumer programs, a pretty old guy (old fashioned in some ways as well), the major selling point was the available free training offered; I've not seen anything like it since the early days of PC software -- the 80's. And the DaVinci manual? OMG, 3588+ pages of everything about the software. A training course for every page, a great manual, and all for free; did I say all of it is free? Can't be in 2023 but it is.
Now add to all this, the education available from you and the only thing left for an old fart like me is to stay awake (err inspired) and pay attention. Thank you again.

Anything that lowers the barrier to entry is a good thing! And anything that forces extra market pressure on Premiere to innovate in any way is a win for EVERYONE!
