India sets record for single-day COVID-19 death toll

India is experiencing a rapid surge in newly confirmed cases of coronavirus nationwide. On Saturday, the country reported more than 4,100 deaths, shattering its previous single-day record. Parth M.N., an independent journalist based in Mumbai, joined CBSN to discuss India's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The saddest thing he said was that a person waited for someone to die in a hallway of a hospital for a bed to clear and took it immediately.

My wife works with a woman from India and her uncle was driven around in an ambulance for 30 hours while they looked for a hospital that could take him... He ended up dying in the ambulance before they could find a place with a bed for him... Very sad.

Here is my best attempt at providing subtitles for him from :18 to 1:28-Well the scariest part here is that the fact that because nobody said it's penetrated until then (we thought we had it) like we had it in the first wave. Yesterday I visited a crematorium in a very small town called Ambizugai(?) where the workers told me that if they got 5 to 6 bodies per day during the first wave this time around they were now getting 20 bodies per day. This is the same crematorium that had 8 bodies being burned in one pile. Uhh, during the first wave you had, their highest death count was about 8 per day, this time around that's now 32. Which is exactly what makes it very scary because the health infrastructure is already shapholding (crumbling?) in rurelous areas and currently in a small town of Usmanivad? where the hospital here has 400 beds and 120 nurses and ward boys operating in the shifts of three (a day)...which basically means that there are 40 staffnurses and ward boys at a time working in the hospital looking after 400 beds. That means that alot of patients are getting unattended...
