"When I started coding...about five years ago at IBM"....yeah that's usually not how it goes for most people...

"How to break into the industry" should be about how to get that job at IBM, and not what you did after you've got it. Or am I missing something?

After the last tip [ "Under Promise but Over Deliver" ]...I realized I was doing the same thing all this time after I started in a startup company as an intern without even knowing it !
Thanks a lot for these valuable tips btw...🤗

This was so valuable. Thank you for asking Emma to share her tips for breaking into the industry. I mostly feel that the biggest issues I'm having are asking questions and taking breaks - I know I can't be the only one.

The hardest thing right now has been just finding a job as a junior dev. 2020 is just a bad year for the entry level workforce. I've been looking since January and no luck yet. Hopefully next year is better. I haven't stopped learning though! At this rate I'll be beyond a Junior level by the time I find work 😀

I would add that whilst you are learning a new language or tech don't be afraid to experiment and just write some code; it might not even compile (or compiles but you get a runtime error) as you will learn a lot from error messages and they will help you phrase questions when you turn to search engines or stack overflow etc...

I think the biggest thing to take away is 'Don't be afraid to ask questions'. Even after 20+ years there are times I need to ask questions and one thing experience taught me is - after trying to find the answer for a short time - if still no valid answers ask someone that may have seen this problem before

2:40 ok i'll take a nap right after this video it's Sunday 5 26 in the morning over here and i'm programming for work so I can catch up with the estimated sprint time.

Rational brain: Dude this is unpaid, stop working for free
Passion brain: Dude you love this stuff it's not work if you enjoy it
Rational brain: The time you give up for free can never be recovered
Passion brain: What are you gonna do? play Star Citizen and crash your ship again due to the gravity bug thats hasnt been fixed yet? Thats also a waste of time... might as well spend it on being productive
Rational brain: Valid point but now you're arguing with yourself on a youtube comment section at 5 27 in the morning...
Passion brain: Well, lets get back to the fun. And when you have no to-do tickets left near the end of the sprint you'll have free time to reflect on the new stuff you've learned this sprint.
Rational brain: WIN-WIN I like your thinking!
Body: FOR FUCK SAKE WHEN CAN I GET SOME SLEEP AROUND HERE ?

The last one is the most valuable thing.
I wish that when I started someone had told me this and I didn't need to find that out while almost burning myself out.

@Honeypot .. Amazing content and clear cut explanations. Loved the tips and their back stories. A little pro tip: an engaging bgm with 10% volume ratio to that with narrators voice in your videos would definitely get higher reach for your channel.

I really appreciate the tips you talked about, I always have been putting a lot of pressure to learn all the day which were gone after weeks. Taking breaks will solve my problem. I should better change my learning strategy.

Some are not native speakers, it would be great if you could add some subtitle next time. CC in youtube aren't that specific.

If you can't break into sofware industry, be your own boss be a contractor, consultant or freelancer. I say in my personal experience i dont care about company's culture, what i do care about, its result of my work, does my work help client to achieve the goals, does a workshop which i provide teach other people better approaches how solve problems, things like that are for me very important.
