Talk radio: The airwaves' great divide

The repeal of the FCC's Fairness Doctrine in 1987 opened the floodgates for extreme partisanship on the airwaves, making commercial talk radio a landscape ripe for controversial opinions aimed at attracting listeners. Correspondent Jim Axelrod looks at how increasingly radical talk radio has unquestionably divided Americans and hardened our politics. (Originally broadcast October 16, 2022.)

NPR isn't liberal according to all the anlaysis. it's just their audience is liberal. unfortunate this piece didn't distinguish between the content and the reveals a lot about the problem.

Who is listening to talk radio anymore? The word "podcast" was never mentioned, Just the old legacy tv people. What about Joe Rogan? What about doing a video on the rise of podcasts and the decline of tv. ? CBS is living in the past, and in denail of the changes, that have already happened.

The game changer is Megyn Kelly, Joe, Soon to be Tucker, all the other talk radio is now on the internet. We can now rewatch, replay, pause, fast forward and people love it.

You never played a single liberal representation.
Guess providing “both sides” is not important to your story.

You should talk about independent internet programs like The Young Turks, Breaking Points, etc.

Balance is the key to power? Then put some balance into the story.

I've been watching Sunday Morning since it started over 40 years ago. It's was to be a lifestyle/arts & entertainment show. But, in the last 6 years, it's been showing it's liberal side. For the past several months I've been deciding, after all these years if I would continue to watch this show. When they stick to it's original intent, it's a really entertaining show. But more and more, they are featuring political segments. And as anyone non-liberal can see, when they do, they always portray conservatives in a negative way. Always. And the segment on Talk Radio painted every one of the top ten (conservative) as radical. They are not radical, but giving the information the MSM won't. And let's be honest, so many those "conspiracies" have become truth. So, I am saying goodbye. What a shame such a great show has become. I'm sure Charles Kuralt would be sad if he were still hear today.

Spiro Agnew was actually ahead of his time. Today, talk radio has the "Nattering Nabobs of Negativism."

I remember when cbs sunday mornings wasn't all politics but rather just good news for a change. I count 3 political segments thus far and good lord it's boring to tears. As the Beatles said, you need to "get back to where you once belonged"! Begging

I’m sorry, but NPR has become just as extreme as right wing talk radio. In 2020 on an episode of all things considered, the hosts preached feelings over facts in response to the George Floyd riots. I will never forget that

Bring back the fairness doctrine, we need to talk to each other not yell at each other

The reason talk hate radio hasn't done well for liberals is because they just don't like that kind of bombastic talk day in and day out. I used to listen to Limbaugh when he would discuss other things than politics but once Obama become president they were all off the rails so to speak. I saw it for what it was-hate.

I'm surprised Ben Shapiro comes in at 10 and not slightly higher. I'm more surprised that Dave Ramsey at no.2 is considered political. Ramsey is a finance guy talking finance.

NPR is at least partially funded by corporations and universities. 🤔 Bkackrock, vangard, and state street social credit requirements may have something to do with NPR leaning left. Maybe?
