Here's what Vader misunderstood: the high ground simply needs to exist for Obi-Wan to prevail. Technically Darth Maul had the high ground in Ep. I, and look how he turned out.

The reason for this, is that in any situation where the high ground was present, Obi-Wan always possesses it, from a certain point of view. If you were to turn the ground upside down, Obi-Wan now has the high ground again.

He will always have it, and that's why he wins.
