Think about the last time you made a big decision. Why did you make that choice? What makes you choose one way, rather than picking any of the other options available to you?

Decision making can be like an iceberg. So much of the activity happens beneath the surface, where it’s difficult to see. And, like an iceberg, if we forget about what’s happening beneath the surface, catastrophe looms.

To feel confident about your choices, it helps to be aware of four key drivers of ethical decision making.

Four (4) key drivers for decision making:
1. Unconscious thoughts
- Heuristics: "mental shortcuts" (they can function as biases)
2. Unthinking custom and practices
- We could absorb these beliefs without asking: Do I agree with these beliefs? Are they valid?
3. Ethical decision making profile
- People tend to have "default settings: Prioritizing on outcomes or relationships
- Each have their own strengths and weaknesses; these weaknesses can lead us not to take in mind other ethical issues
4. Reflective practice
- It considers context and people affected by our decision making
- Guided by our purpose, values and principles
- Thought of "Our-Go-To"; "In reality, we are drive by our first three aforementioned": that is why Ethics - the active practice of making and justifying - is important
- If we can't admit our potential for bad decisions, we struggle in making the good ones
