EXPERIMENT 4: COLLISIONS AND CONSERVATION OF LINEAR MOMENTUM AIM OF EXPERIMENT: Determination of velocity of colliding objects by using conservation of momentum. APPARATUS: Air Table Give detailed information about Linear Momentum, Conservation of Linear Momentum, and properties (types of Collisions). THEORY: DATA OBTAINING AND DATA ANALYSIS: In this experiment, both of the packs experience uniform motion with constant velocity. It is important to measure the velocity of both packs before elastic collision. For that purpose, displacement and time taken for displacement for both objects are measured and the below tables are obtained; Note that the acceleration of both packs is zero, so the velocity of packs can be obtained by measuring displacement and time taken for the displacement. Below tables are obtained; PACK 1: (x - xo) (cm) (x - xo) (m) t (sec) 5 0.2 10 10 0.4 15 15 0.6 20 20 0.8 25 25 1 PACK 2: (x - xo) (cm) (x - xo) (m) t (sec) 10 0.2 20 20 0.4 30 30 0.6 40 40 0.8 50 50 1 1. Sketch (x - xom) vs t (sec) graphs for both packs and calculate the slope of the line(s). 2. Show that the velocity of each pack is equal to the slope of the associated graph, and calculate the velocity of both packs before collision. The displacement of pack 1 is also measured after collision; PACK 1 (AFTER COLLISION): (x - xo) (cm) (x - xo) (m) t (sec) 6 0.2 12 12 0.4 18 18 0.6 24 24 0.8 30 30 1 3. Sketch the graph of (x - xom) vs t (sec) for Pack 1 and calculate the slope of the line (velocity of PACK 1 after collision). 4. Assuming that both packs are moving in the same direction before and after the collision, use the conservation of momentum Law and determine the velocity of PACK 2 after collision. (mass of PACK 1 = mass of PACK 2 = 100 g) 5. The real velocity of PACK 2 after collision is 0.45 m/s. Calculate the percentage error of the experiment. The real velocity of PACK 2 after collision is 0.45 m/s. Calculate the percentage error of the experiment.
