1938 War of the Worlds broadcast prompted my grandfather to participate in an ad hoc local militia. They barricaded streets and stood watch with rifles in hand. This is per my father, who was a very small boy at the time. Some instances of the reaction to the broadcast seem to have actually induced a powerful reaction, assuming Pop remembered his childhood clearly.
