The crescent and the star are not symbols of Islam, you cannot see it in Makkah and Medina, either Jerusalem (in Al Quds some reflection of Ottoman rule might be found). Although crescent is set upon mosques, Muslims (true believers, not ethnics) do not identify any symbols.

You forgot to mention why Byzantium adopted the crescent moon and star flag. It was because the Ancient Greek Goddess Selene was the God of Byzantium. Just as Athena was the God of Athens.

By the way most of the symbols originated in older other traditions (not only the crescent). However, they all adopted them as their religious/cultural symbol…

Descriptions of the Fish symbol in Christianity are usually correct but incomplete. In Greek, the letters making up the word (transliterated) ICHTHYS, meaning fish, are an acronym for the Greek words for Jesus Christ God's Son Savior. That acronym may have contributed to the reason early Christians adopted the Fish symbol in the first place.

The crescent moon is not a religious symbol because it has no basis in Islam. Rather, it is a political symbol adopted by the Ottoman Empire.

Symbol/flag is just a sign to identify which group, club, party, religion, country or ethnicity it is. In Islam, there is no specific symbol according to Holy Quran and Sahih Hadiths (except Shahada written in white cloth). Later, Muslim sultans used 'Crescent & Star' on their flags just to represent their Muslim empires (Golden age of Muslim civilization). It has no relationship with (Shirk) worship to something else or any kind of bogus explanations by non-muslims. Besides, Islamic (Arabic) calendar depends on Moon cycle and Crescent sign resembles the happy Eid day of our Muslim culture. This is most probably why Sultans used that symbol on their flags. So, there is no need to suspect anything wrong about it. May Almighty Allah bless and unite all Muslim ummah, Aameen ☪️💚🤝🏽
