The Santa Barbara Mission is the only continuously operating mission out of the original 21 missions.
The Santa Barbara Mission was the tenth in the mission chain and has had four different versions on this land, just two miles outside of Santa Barbara City.
We loved our time at the Mission and enjoyed learning more about the history from the extensive audio tour. There is so much more to learn about the Mission and its history than what we crammed into this video. We just didn't have enough time to fit it all in.
The Santa Barbara Mission could never have been completed or sustained without the help of The Chumash people. Important information about the lives of the Chumash at the mission and the revolt from their own history is essential to share that. We found these links informative
There are also more interesting people buried in the graveyard, such as the Mexican Governor Pio Pico and Juana Maria, better known to history as the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island.
This timeline, while lengthy, contains an incredible history of the mission and Santa Barbara itself
We truly hope you enjoyed this tour and will join us again as we hike and explore our way across California and beyond.
