HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT TAMBOURINE! My Top 3 Beginner Tambourines for Layne Redmond Style Playing

❓❓❓ Confused about how to pick the best beginner Layne Redmond style tambourine? I tested 9 new tambourines, and here are my top 3 picks! Plus, I'll share the criteria I used, the 5 key elements that go into how to choose which tambourine is right for you.

🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ Hi, I'm The Rhythm Inlet's Barbara Gail. For 27 years, my partner and I owned, managed, and ran a small music store solely focused on hand-drums and world percussion, and ukuleles.

I'm also a longtime student of the late Layne Redmond, & her legacy, "When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual History of Rhythm".

🌸⚪️🌸 Inspired by her work with The Mob of Angels, I love teaching tambourine processions in Layne's tradition of ritual & reverie, meditation & magic, ceremony & celebration, healing & heart-connection.

🆓🆓 "The Tambourine Path" is a YouTube series of free, fun, informative video lessons, here in YouTube Land.

🎞🎞 In today's video, I'm answering the questions that beginners have been asking since my first video came out on the subject, 'Which Tambourine?'

🙌🏽 🙌🏽 So together, let's choose a drum that's best for you!

🔗🔗 Below are Amazon links to these drums that I recommend, & Layne's book, "When the Drummers Were Women".

🌸⚪️🌸 Predominantly played by women in group processions, in the temples & in the streets of the Ancient Mediterranean World, this beautiful & transformational instrument is a member of the frame drum family.

❤️❤️ Today my passion & purpose in sharing these videos are born from over 27 years of teaching & facilitating myriad programs in group rhythm, movement, & hand-drumming for people of all ages, abilities, & challenges.

🎶💜🎶 This includes tambourine processional troupes infused with sacred space called 'Moonrise: Daughters of an Ancient Pulse'; women's fusion groups called 'DrumRise! the Art of Women's Drumming'; & drum-song-dance circles for healing, transformation & empowerment, called 'Women, Rhythm, & Ritual'.

✨😎✨ I continue to weave my drum magic, because drumming helps to alchemize the intensity & density of individual & collective energies, into a lighter, higher vibration. So let's keep drumming!

❤️❤️ Dedicated as always to the memory of Layne Redmond. May her soul continue to drum with Mobs of Angels.

🙏🏽🙏🏽 Thank you for joining me!
🌀🌀Until next time, may your day be in rhythm.

🌸⚪️🌸 One drum, one dance, one song, one heart,

UPDATE: as I prepare to teach in-person workshops once again (and yay about that!), I’ve been purchasing tambourines to provide for my attendees. Of the 6 economy ones, the Tosnail brand, I had to return 4 of them, received the 4 replacements, and STILL could only keep 2 out of the total of 10 that I tested!!! Bummer! 😕

Therefore I feel like I can no longer recommend these for you unfortunately! I’m so disappointed!

The Remo TA 5210s and Layne Redmond Lotuses however, continue to be very good! Of the nine TA 5210s that I ordered, only one needed to be replaced. And the 7 Lotuses are all excellent. 🌸⚪️🌸

I still recommend that if possible for you, you order a few, test them all out, and return the ones you don’t wish to keep. This works best for those of you who have Amazon Prime and double check for free returns.

Good luck everyone! And again, if you ever have any questions, I’m always here to answer and support your Tambourine Path journey. 🥰

May rhythmic blessings flow from your heart, to your hands, and through your drums!
😊🙏🏼💖✨

Great video, great info! I myself prefer the Remo Layne Redmond Lotus. I’m glad that you mentioned that the jingles are larger and that’s what I love about it! The jingles are easier for me to “catch” and not as heavy as the Riq. Thanks again for sharing

Thank you so much, Barbara, for your great lessons! I bought my first tambourine yesterday - suddenly! It just spoke to me when I came to a music store with my son, and today I found your videos and already finished five first lessons! I love your teaching style so much, and looking forward to know more!

Very helpful review, thankyou. I had just been checking out all these drums, and have already ordered the Red remo, as another review said it was the brighter sound. Ive only ordered one, so hoping its got a sound i love. I also play frame drums, and wanted a Tambourine/Riq that wasnt too heavy, with a good sound. Thanks for sharing these drums. Subscribed, and look forward to see more of your drumming.

You are so right Barbara. I am learning on the Layne Redmon Lotus - and my heart sings every time I pick it up. I am not getting the same joy from a 14inch Reno tar. I feel like a larger, deeper more resonant frame drum would make all the difference, but that will have to wait until I gain more expertise - as the ones I've seen on Etsy are so expensive. Love your postings.

I love this video! It’s so informational and now I know what to look for when so buy a drum. I bought a super cheap one months ago, but it just didn’t feel right. I love your recommendations. ❤️🥰

I would love to find one of the original Lotus tambourines. Been looking for years, but no luck. If you happen to know of one, please let me know. Thank you so much for the video. Very informative.

I have the 10" Remo TA5210 black and now I think I'd dprefer the Layne Redmond with the Renaissance head. I think I'll prefer less jingles and perhaps it's also easier to balance.

What is the difference between the sound and weight of 5 sets of jingles vs 8 sets? Do you have both types at the store?

Thanks for your useful guidance. The Layne Redmond Lotus Tambourine 10inch skin head is renaissance or fiberskyn?

Hi Barbara. Thank you for this informative video. I have the Remo TA-5210 but find it awkward and a bit heavy for me. I have small hands and some age related weakness. Would the Layne Redmond drum be easier for me, in your opinion or are there other you could recommend for me?

I've been learning the frame drum so far but would now like to include a tambourine. Depends what I can find available online here in the UK. There doesn't seem as much choice as in the US! Probably be the Remo like my frame drum. xx
