●The first contact lenses were invented in 1888 by German physiologist Dr. A E. Fick. These early contact lenses were originally made of a thin layer of "eye safe" glass and were meant to be worn on diseased eyes as a sort of eye patch.
●Earlier than that, the first practical design for contact lenses was conceived by British astronomer Sir John Herschel in 1823.
●And MUCH earlier than that, the idea of the contact lens was dreamed up by none other Leonardo da Vinci in around 1508. Like many of his ideas for a new invention, he sketched it, but being the procrastinator he was, he never got around to physically making the thing a reality.

1633: René Descartes suggested a design for a lens at the end of a water-filled tube that was placed on the cornea

1887: German glassblower F.A. Muller created the first known glass contact lens, but it was heavy and covered the entire eye

1888: Swiss physician Adolf E. Fick and Paris optician Edouard Kalt created and fitted the first glass contact lenses to correct vision problems

1936: New York optometrist William Feinbloom introduced scleral lenses made of a combination of glass and plastic

1948: California optician Kevin Tuohy introduced the first contact lenses that resembled modern contact lenses

1971: Soft contact lenses were first introduced

1978: Gas permeable contact lenses were introduced

1981: Soft contact lenses for extended (overnight) wear were produced

1987: Disposable soft contact lenses were introduced

2002: Silicone-hydrogel contact lenses were introduced

I live in the UK and
I have to wear torics (British company) because of a stigmatism in both my eyes
Unfortunately, currently, they don't make varifocals, which like Penn I need, so I'm stuck with my glasses
