I live in south Korea and have been approached by foreigners, asking for directions and I'd definitely recommend asking if we speak English first before automatically asking your question.

Thinking that a stranger in a different country would speak English it's rude you have to start with a few sentences in local language like "sorry can you help me" "i don't speak well" bc assuming that they immediately would speak English even when they do they wouldn't bc they or doubt their language skills or just insecure to speak

advice from a traveler so be aware and be nice to a local language and show some fk respect to their language and culture you are a guest there

Hmm… I think it’s a little bit exaggerated. Unless you meant “THEN” was in 1970/80s, that’s not way different from what I had. In 90s around Gangnam, you may have the “NOW” responses. About a month ago I visited S. Korea, lots of them could speak English surprisingly well. Probably, I could visit another Korea. LOL
