How To Find Commercial Real Estate Mentors // When I first got into the real estate industry, I knew pretty much...nothing.

But what I did know is that there were people out there that knew a lot more than me that I could learn from.

And because of that, I spent a lot of time and effort trying to meet these people and soak up their years of experience that I just didn’t have yet.

Fortunately, thanks to some very patient, forgiving, and understanding mentors, I was able to build a foundation in the industry and get clear on my goals, and I would not be where I am today without those people who have helped me along the way.

But what I’ve found through working with Break Into CRE Academy members over the last few years, is that a lot of people are running into the same problems I ran into when I was just starting out - not knowing how to find these mentors that can help guide them in their career, and understandably feeling intimidated by the entire process of trying to connect with successful people to ask advice.

So if you’re struggling to find a mentor and someone to help guide you through those first few steps in your commercial real estate career, in this video, we’ll walk through my three most important lessons I’ve learned about finding, and keeping, the right mentors, and how you can apply these lessons to build a stronger network of successful industry professionals, and make better career decisions as a result.

What's the best piece of career advice you've received from a mentor?

Great advice! I completely appreciated the comment about "not asking."

Great videos. Loved your board of directors analogy, and connecting with people 1 or 2 steps ahead of you. Makes a lot of sense.

This honestly might be your most valuable video. The advice on building relationships applies to so many other areas of life outside of CRE.

You really hit the nail on the head when you advised investing in advice, knowledge, and strategy from individuals that are just a couple steps ahead of you in experience, as well as diversifying your mentor network. I'm guilty of diverting my attention solely to industry veterans with an established track record of success and a residual book of business. While seasoned mentors have absolutely fostered my development and offered an outstanding granular approach to achieving success in the CRE business, sometimes the method to the madness, as I like to call it, can be archaic and unfeasible to an individual who is new to the industry and facing different challenges as you stated. In short, the growth I've achieved through connecting with CRE professionals congruent with my level of experience, and/or slightly above it, have also offered me many invaluable perspectives and progressive approaches I've applied to my foundation. I'm happy to provide specific examples if requested. Thanks again and phenomenal insight per usual.

Very well articulated. Be careful with mentors that say they will help you and they turn around and take your off market deals without you knowing. Use your advice Justin 💯

A lot of this advice resonated with me personally. As a high schooler who networks on LinkedIn often, I’ve found that the most helpful people are those who are younger. I’m sure it’s because they are able to relate to my situation more so than someone who has 20+ years of experience!

Hey! Thanks so much for this video!
I really enjoyed watching it. It helped me confirm that it is not disrespectful to rely on more than one mentor, rather it is better not to [rely] at all. I didn’t know it was also putting pressure on my mentor and now that I know, I am happy to fall back and have more than one helpful resource. I love asking questions and learning more. I would love to have perspectives of many experienced professionals. My mentor is great, and I thought it was rude to try and seek for more. But, watching this video, this is my future we’re talking about. I am lucky to receive guidance from many. Thanks again!

I like the overall advice I know a gentleman who is already in the Financial freedom sector, I've asked him some questions on how to go about acquiring. He pointed me towards Commercial Real Estate for Multifamily starting with 5-6 units solid advice. I also like your idea of getting someone who is several steps in front of you. Great advice thank you!
