Gorgonian Sea Fan Corals

An often-overlooked category of corals is the Gorgonians. They include both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic sea fans as well as sea whips that grow in a corkscrew shape. Hopefully this quick video was helpful for you guys considering sea fans for your reef tank. They provide some really cool aesthetics and you can even make a Caribbean themed tank with these. If you have further questions about these, post them in the comments below.

Awesome video Than! Gorgonians are some of our favorite corals. They seem to grow well on our dry jellyfish food, which is interesting.

This is my goal. I want to make a Pacific twilight reef tank with anthias, centropyge, and azooxanthellate gorgonians. Maybe some Porites and christmas tree worms. also it would be my first saltwater tank lol. At least I have a degree in marine microbiology!

what would you say is minimal tank size for sea fans? I have a 180litre (about 40gallons I think) 3ft tank with a fairly strong powerhead

How about compatibility with other corals? Are they passive or aggressive?

I’m trying my hand with a red and Yellow Sea fan. You referenced dry powder foods in the video, what would those be (brands or ingredients to look for)? I use both reef roofs and coral feast currently. Would those do the trick? Of course while adding some some other foods as well, such as phyto feast or something like that.

I want to try one, I have an established filterless, skimmer less, filter feeder set up. I have happy mussels, clams, and coral. If I can keep NPS bivalves do I have a shot?

I have a 14 gallon mixed reef that caters to NPS corals and filter feeders such as gorgonians goniopora (green short tentacle) and electric flame scallops. I use ecosystem miracle mud and a 24/7 lit fuge with caulerpa. The key I think to keeping these creatures is the feeding. I feed reef chilli and dry phyto twice a week and baby brine shrimp for the other organisms (nano fish mandarin goby peppermint shrimp) 3 times a week. Everything does quite well only problems are algae so make sure your clean up crew is strong or run a skimmer (not recommended if catering to NPS organisms)
