Growing up in the French Quarter in New Orleans in the 70s, there was a women we called Ruthie the Duck Lady. She was homeless and always had a duck. Everyone in the Quarter looked out for her. This sketch reminds me of those times.

They study art when college was 50 dollars a semester and you see them in every Gallery open. Washington Square Park is their natural habitat. Plus they have a biracial kid and they where all friends with Andy Warhol.

I have a picture I took in Central Park one morning like 3 years ago of a person in a costume of Big Bird from Sesame Street sitting on a bench by themselves under a walking overpass next to a suitcase overflowing with puppets. It was like 6a.m. on a cold weekend in February. That’s New York to me.

We had a lady like that in Latvia as well. She'd put on a small boombox in Riga old town and just twirl to the music. Looked very similar to Kate and everyone knew her. Now that they're monitoring who gets to perform in old town she's gone and I kinda miss her.
