Build considerably better than merely competitive small cars and sales will be strong and reasonably consistent. When pretty much everyone has the same convenience gimmes as everyone else, you have to build a fundamentally better car. For FORD, in the immediate, an AWD Focus set below the RS and having AWD as an easily had option for SEL and Titanium trims would shore it up nicely. A revival of the Ford Sierra/ Merkur XR4Ti, a compact RWD Coupe and sedan would be best longer term.

Such cars may not be the strongest sellers in the segment, there are far more people who don't care what they drive than do, but it won't fall off badly or be as vulnerable to shifts in the market or economy, either.
