Ammonia salts or smelling salts are used for a variety of things, such as athletes about to perform, weight lifters going for a big lift, waking up people who are unconscious etc. She said it smells like piss, which is exactly true, as what the ammonia salts does is it sends a signal to the brain that you are around something repulsive. It's an evolutionary trait we have that makes us avoid areas were we urinate and defecate, or avoid being knocked out and laying in your own waste.
