Short Form Content Is BROKEN. Can We Fix It?

Gosh, in fear of this I quit watching short form content earlier this year and I think it was a really good decision. To me, nothing is more sad than walking in on a whole room of children at school watching shorts/tik tok and watching literacy rates decline due to them having zero attention span.

the worst part is that short form content is designed to hack your brain and sort of make you lose control of yourself. I have never downloaded or used tiktok before but I still often find myself consuming short form content at length because of how instagram and youtube shove their own short form content down your throat. For example, when you open the youtube mobile app, often they will automatically put you on youtube shorts instead of the actual home page, and it instantly seizes control of your attention and sucks you into a scrolling session, until you get exhausted from frankly doing nothing at all.

I very rarely watch short form content, but if an interesting topic pops up on the YouTube front page, i might click it. I never scroll through the shorts page specifically.
I like long form content way more than short form.

I started making shorts because of the quick success, but they just arent as fun to edit. Right now I'm focussing more on long form videos and the lack of viewership you brought up is really affecting me, it is a really big problem. Also, great summary of the problem

nice content ! u earned a sub. i think shorts ruined other video games also, but for the case of minecraft there is a lot of scripted content especially on shorts, and because this "new" type of content much easier to make, there is a lot more fake/scripted content unfortunately

honestly, i used to agree with you, but now that you point this out, i now think that people just used to enjoy content more, everyone can still watch 30 minute videos, they just don't want to find videos to watch, sometimes you just want to be lazy and let youtube pick your videos for you, i can watch 30 minute drew gooden videos, just because people are watching short videos doesn't mean they cant focus for long, imagine you are having a conversation with your friend in a public park, you wouldn't stare at them, you would watch the birds, or the trees moving in the wind, or the people around you, youtube isn't shortening attention spans, its designed to be short so that your not fulfilled, so that you want more, so that you keep scrolling past midnight.

As someone who watches whatever anime my friends throw at me, i can easily pay attention to a video that are 20 minutes long. But creators really should start making more long paced videos to balance things out

the counter to this is streams. Less edited, longer form, way longer retention but less active engagement from some. They're also popular as hell right now, so as long as both exist we can kind of see how people's attention spans could balance out

edit: another thought I had was about you mentioning 20 minute mc videos. Especially since you used DanTDM as an example. When you're a kid during the Renaissance of youtube, you usually don't have much better to do so 20 minute long videos were suitable as generally there isn't as much available. Plus a guy with a personality can be really entertaining regardless of age, so one wouldn't care as much. But when processes get streamlined, content creation gets industrialized and whatnot, and you and the general audience around your age grows up, those long for content videos get thrusted aside because your audience grew up and the next is given more processed servings created by organizations to figure out how to compete in one of the biggest markets on the internet. So when a kid goes to pick a video, they get those MrBeast-ified (don't like that term btw just using it for the current context) videos in their recommended page and thus encouraging the feedback loop of shortening content. And when one size fits one, one size must fit all.

Well, people that watch shortform content are going to watch shorter content, whem you make long form videos you're instantly appealing to those who want to watch longer videos. I think the proble shouldnt be pushed onto the viewer or youtube for watching short form content but the creator for not making a engaging enouhg video to suit those long form viewers needs.

People that generally watch super long videos wont gravitatete towards short form content because its not something they are interested in. So if you have a longer video which appeals to people whom watch those long form videos AND it has a lower viewer duration, it simply means that the video isnt interesting enough for the viewer..

Fax, my 2 minute datapack showcases have average watch time shorter than 1 minute, and most of people quit in the 5 seconds introduction, I guess I have to scream in my mic "HELLO WHATSUP GUYS I MADE A NEW DATAAAPCK LEAVE A LIKE AND SUBACRIVE"
