My explanation of the electoral college is:
"The weirdest and probably worst way to try and choose who's in charge*."
It's needlessly complicated and just flat-out wierd. It would be simpler and more democratic to actually just have a full-on popular vote for who's president and the person who gets the most votes becomes president.

The Electoral College: you know how it's hard to do math with big numbers? Well, that's why we don't want to count 150, 000, 000 votes. So instead we just count 538 votes. The millions of people choose which 538. And they choose them by counting 150, 000, 000 votes. Problem solved!
