What a great review. I remember The Children of the Stones vividly (although no one else seems to). I did buy the DVD a few years ago, and rewatched it - I was 11 years old again. I also visited Avebury a few years ago with a classic car group. Sadly there wasn't a burgundy Austin maxi with us...

One of the scariest TV shows I remember watching as a kid. I have the series on DVD and both of the books. I didn't enjoy Return to the Stones as much.
The theme still gives me goosebumps.

The yellow windows inside the post office: Shops often lined their windows with yellow film to stop the sun bleaching the merchandise within. It reflects a shop where there isnt a fast turnover of stock.

I was a bit young for this at the age of six, but have discovered it at the ripe age of 54! So intelligent, robust, and free from vampires compared to modern teen media. The extraordinary in ordinary surroundings.

Everyone who has seen this remembers the wonderful music. This is another series I was obsessed by, I loved the whole thing. I have visited Avebury, a beautiful village where I ate icecream in the shade of one of the stones. Silbury Hill nearby is just as mysterious. I have read Return to the Stones, perhaps because I am older it didn't have the same effect but I could picture the place. Thank you for the video.

I clearly remember watching this in 1977 when I was 8 years old, it was creepy and eerie enough to have a lasting impact! My grandparents lived in Marlborough, so I had visited Avebury and seen the stone circle in person. Many years ago I bought (and I still have) the DVD. Must give it a spin again some day. Thanks for this interesting video 👍

This is a great video thank you I was 11 when I watched this in 1977 and it scared the hell out of me and before I could recover we were introduced to sapphire and steel which also scared the hell out of me ! After watching your video it made me want to check that I still had the DVD of children of the stones which I managed to find so I'm happy now because I'm going to watch it again !

“Matthew heads off for a cycle ride” Yes, this was a significant thing in my 1970s’ childhood holidays, exploring the countryside on my bike with the only expectation that I get home in time for tea. I think such freedom would be unthinkable now (at least for British kids), or am I wrong? The ability of kids to go off and amuse themselves, depicted in this TV series and elsewhere (like Catweazle and Mark Lester films), must seem rather strange by today’s standards.

Watched this in the 80s on Zimbabwean tv . Was the highlight of our week and creeped us out
I just randomly thought about this show this morning

The appearance of the lorry is meant to be a clue that they are trapped in a circle within the circle, this is showing the outside briefly breaking through. The somewhat bigger mystery in the story is where on earth do they get their food from if nothing can get in or out.Watched this on its first screening have to admit I didn't sleep well after the final episode

The complete series is here on YT. I remember this from childhood, though screening was sporadic here in STV land. It stuck with me, the haunting music, the chanting, and people turning to stone. Thanks.

It's a while since I watched it but they mention a barber-surgeon, and I think that's who Dai is after the reset of the time loop, which is why he has knives. I'm not sure it's all supposed to make perfect coherent sense!

Aah, I actually included a clip of this in my 'Horrific Cartoons' video! Just mentioning scary kids TV!

This was a little before my time but I remember Charlie Brooker talking about how scary this was and your review was fantastic!

The DVD set seems out of "print" now, but there are many second-hand copies doing rhe rounds on t'internet for a LOT less than the price you mention. £35 seems the average. Also, like many classic TV series, it's on YouTube in full.

After the Brakes break Hendrick's spell over the villagers, they seem to still be in the village, but in a different timeline. The changes are mostly suoerficial, but they're there to show the jump.
Dai now no longers closely knows Matthew; he's no longer a poacher but a travelling knife sharpener; Sandra's mother has a different hairstyle, etc.

4:46 - Surprised you didn't mention that was UK 50s thru 80s go to stock character actor Freddie Jones, one of those actors who turned up everywhere (he was a favourite of David Lynch as well) and was also the father of Toby Jones.

I remember this on TV. Don't remember when I last saw it or whether it was repeated.

So Adam Brake was played by Gareth Thomas, who played Blake (in Blake's 7)!

I loved this serial. I think the music makes it creepier. They don't make children's TV like this anymore. I couldn't believe the price of the DVD and I won't be selling mine.
