Minidisc Cleaner Troubleshooting

The Halloa Radial Minidisc Cleaning Kit (HL-631) is supposed to clean minidiscs. Not players and recorders, the discs themselves. But this one doesn't, it makes them more dirty and also leaves something on the disc hub. In this video, I try to solve these issues.

Here's the link to the IPA I use. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Magnets are made from a material like an iron powder compressed into the desired shape and chrome plated for protection, Once that chrome plating deteriorate the magnet materials starts to crumble, The best way is to remove the magnet and glue in a new one that has the same shape.

Neodymium magnets are plated with nickel iirc to protect the pretty fragile ceramic like magnet inside and prevent oxidation. The problem is old magnets always seem to have this issue with the plating disintigrating and the magnet inside powderizing.

You spent so much time and energy on a "useful" device that does nothing. I have never used such a device. I had 2 or 3 minidiscs in my collection with some dirt from the previous owner and I cleaned them by hand with a cotton swab. But thank you for sharing this and reminding us to never use such a device. Thank you for the effort.

Disintegrating (old) neodynium magnet, have seen this before in a speaker, it was even worse, it started to crumple.

It looks like a chrome coating the magnet had when it was new.

Can you somehow make another one of those foam pad things to insert inside?

Is it possible that the sponge ring should be the other way around, so the sponge part upwards?

Must be dirt on that felt pad as you can see fine circular scratches on the disc surface as you took it out of the cleaner. Looks like it's doing more harm than good. If I get a dirty disc I use a foam cotton bud (q-tip) dipped in IPA and carefully clean the disc surface by hand.

In all the years I've used a mini-disc, I have never cleaned the media. Ever! Using a device to clean a mini-disc, is like buying a device to clean your floppy disks. IMO

This “cleaner” is the perfect way to destroy your mini discs.

From my own experience, I can tell you that there is no easy way to clean minidiscs! Any machinery that touches the bottom of the minidisk is not ok, because it will leave fine scratch marks. I use an air jet pump that blows all the lint that collects on the minidisc and inside the shell. The device must also be blown from time to time, because eventually the fluff from the device will end up in minidiscs. A mini vacuum cleaner can be used.

It's a cheap Chinese, degrading neodymium magnet
