getting ready to build a bunk bed for my 2 little boys and i appreciate the instruction and inspiration! i didn't think plywood rails would work but you glue 2 or 3 layers here and that looks plenty strong. thanks joey! from California

Nice colours - and he's gonna get years of swinging on that lower shelf out of that bed! 👍😎

Been working with plywood, painting the edges, and the bog/filler trick works so well! Stoked to see you doing the same thing, wasn't sure if I was on the right track

I built a similar bed and found that much of the creaking came from two painted surfaces rubbing together. When I sanded in those areas the creaking stopped.

Never thought of using plywood like that, It turned out awesome.

You can add a second rail to the first. Just use dowels to connect the second/lower rail to the first. Also, you can loosen the fit of the rail without decreasing safety. It is actually wiser to have a loose fitting rail for quick removal in the event of an accident, such as a kid getting stuck. Last thing you want to do is cut up a rail with a chainsaw to get a kid out... Trust me I know... On a store bought bed too. I do like the idea of this being made from scraps, good use of materials.

This is great! I have a feeling that shelf is gonna be used as a stepladder to get up into that bed before long haha.

Very nice build and vid Joey. Just FYI though, your kid is going to use this shelf as a ladder as soon as he can, so I'd make it a little sturdier.

Joey, that rail spacing at the top looks to be too high, sorry man don’t mean to be nit picking stuff but I have 4 kids and researched this at depth before building both their bunks. It’s actually not so much for sleeping as it is for playing. Their bodies can slip under and their head gets stuck which can be potentially horrific.
No matter how many times I stop them and warn them my little guys always end up playing on the bunk with their friends/cousins.
It’s an easy fix just to add another piece to the bottom or make it from a 200mm board with the the same tongue to slip into the groove, making it a slightly looser fit 2nd time round might solve some of the issues with inserting and removing too.
In Australia it has to pass the 125mm squishy ball test, as long as you can’t push a ball through the gap you’re fine.

When the kids are that out cold, I don't think a little 'Creak', will wake them. Planning for the future.... When he's old enough to have friends over for a sleep over, the Trundle is already to go LOL.

I like any and everything you make Joey, but how is he getting up there? I don't recall you making a ladder.
