Taking apart a TomTom

I got ahold of a broken tomtom and this is me taking it apart.

Wow, The ribbon cable has a latch, its the white colored plastic piece, it needs to be pushed out and then the ribbon cable slides out, not pulled out! The bezel removal process was effective but you should work the bezel off from the inside of the LCD/bezel with a pry tool from top to bottom, it pops out with out any issues.

I wish that your title had included the full model. Luckily, it appears that yours is EXACTLY the same as mine, which is a TomTom XL N14644 Canada 310. I hope that my comment helps someone else looking for instructions on this model.

I think it's a nice idea to try this reasamble the thing once BEFORE you try to film it. AND not forget to actually film WHAT you are doing!

Hardest part is replacing the ribbon cable? to the screen digitizer. Its a right little git to get it back into the long white slot without stretching it. you can buy new digitizers alone for around 9 uk pounds.

First try to reset your tomtom. I was about to throw mine out as it was dead but a friend suggested I reset it by holding the on button down for thirty five seconds. Sure enough the drums started and it came back to life. Google" reset Tomtoms" as some models reset differently.

Oh yeah. And don't confuse the TomTom XL N14644 Canada 310 with the TomTom One N14644 Canada 310. They are different and open differently. Someone else has a video on how to open the TomTom One.

"Star shaped" screws are Torx not Philips! You'll probably strip the head if you use a philips. Cheap Torx drivers are available at dollar stores.

I have found a perfectly good TomTom XL, and I heard that all TomTom GPS models run linux.
