The CRISPR-Cas system has the potential to treat the genetic causes of disease by allowing researchers to edit mutations within the human genome of living people... someday. But such applications are still years away, just as it takes time for any new treatment or therapy to undergo the required safety and efficacy testing. But that's one of many reasons why so many researchers are studying the gene-editing tool, which researchers derived from the immune system of bacteria.

Speaking before the Research Triangle Park chapter of Sigma Xi, Rodolphe Barrangou discusses the background and many potential applications of the CRISPR-Cas system. Barrangou heads up the CRISPR lab at NC State University.
