1:29 The item stat is for time trials. The full bar means you get 3 mushrooms, 2 thirds means 2 mushrooms, and 1 third means 1 mushroom.

The alternate map is useful to see how big is your lead compared to the computer players. To see if blue shells are a threat or if you need to pump in more snaking.

Professor E.Gadd was planned to appear as a DRIVER in this game! But then, Nintendo replaced him by Dry Bones.
And E.Gadd never appeared in any other Mario game, except Luigi's Mansion 2.

The item stat actually indicates how likely you are to receive more items. If it's low, for instance, you'll more likely get one mushroom instead of three when hitting an item box.
