When Coffee Was Banned in Italy...

You'd think something like coffee being banned in Italy would be a huge story that would be repeatedly included in all of the articles on coffee history, wouldn't you?

I would, so I was really shocked when I got hold of this little, interesting booklet from the second world war, which contained the news that coffee was banned in Italy during the Second World War!

Kev you have done great on your history research I found this fascinating. Regrettably, despite the internet, items of historical importance do disappear.

Not something I’ve heard either but that said I haven’t really considered much of the historical events of coffee. More videos on these events would be good 👍🏻 thanks for sharing

Hi Kev, here's a quote from a Quartz article:

"During World War II, coffee in the country basically disappeared, replaced by surrogates like barley—as a consequence of the embargo that the League of Nations imposed on fascist Italy."

Interesting. Like you, I never knew this. But one thing that doesn't quite fit with me, is that wasn't Ethiopia part of Mussolini's "empire", and doesn't Ethiopia produce coffee?
Thanks for doing this video.

Hi Kev, I really enjoyed this video. Does anyone know why we call this preparation of coffee an Americano?
