Im still shocked that all these big companies are ok with matter, I feel like google and amazon are going to lose the most since a lot of people will switch to homekit

a video on 'setting up a new smart home around matter' would be appreciated. Thanks.

But can EXISTING PRE MATTER devices be Matter compatible?

OTA update support in Matter (and Thread) are a big advantage. That is one of the few reasons to start manufacturer specific apps.

I see ADT on the graphics with partnered brands. Does it mean it is likely that a professional security system is coming to HK?

I use Apple HomeKit but also have a Nest thermostat in the house. In order to control the Nest I need to use Homebridge. Does Matter mean that the Nest could show up in the Apple Home app without the need for Homebridge anymore?

So what are Philips Hue saying about Zigbee and their bridge hub? Will Zigbee be phased out or made compatible with Thread?

I think this is the most balanced review of the current state of Matter I have seen since the official launch a few days ago. Thanks for that! For example, it is one hell of an accomplishment to bring so many large companies together and get them to agree to vision, strategy, and tactics for moving this forward. Thinking of the corporate egos involved, the largest of whom typically only see each other in a courtroom, this is one massive accomplishment.

That said, your caution of approaching the process (especially the beginning) as a journey which will not always progress without bumps, is sagacious. I’m sure we’re all missing a key device category from the limited set of categories right now. But, given their plans for biannual updates (with category updates apparently possible BETWEEN biannual updates), I would imagine that we’ll have plenty to keep us busy between updates so that most of our category will be available within 18 months.

Lingering problems that I see right now: I hate that hubs are still a big part of some device manufacturers plans, the interplay between devices is still unknown, and how quickly will Apple’s new Home infrastructure enable better use of Matter. It might be just me, but Phillips comes across as though their hub will forever be a required part of your financial hit to use their products. Aqara, on the other hand, seems ready to first enable backwards compatibility via hub updates that eventually give way to devices with. After which do not require a hub. I wonder if this means that Aqara hubs updated to support Matter will become part of your Thread network by becoming a Thread router. The older accessories will certainly be limited to Zigbee, but expanding the range of the Aqara hubs via Thread’s network will be awesome.

I have still no clue what this means for my setup. Apple Homekit, Hue bulbs, Fritz Thermostats, integrated with Homebridge on a RaspberryPi.

So, for those looking to start making their home a smart home, would you recommend holding off a couple of months to see what comes out with the Matter release?

Also, why do I feel like there will be subscription services unveiled for tiered access

My current Eero is jacking up prices in Nov which is making me want to get a different new router. Does it make sense for me to wait for a Matter router or just move forward with a good router w/ home kit built in? Thoughts?

I really loved how the video explains so well about matter and how it works.

What about backwards compatibility? Especially for family members (or room mates) who have older devices not running ios16: what can they keep doing and what can’t they do anymore if we upgrade to matter? What happens if one person has one newer device and one older device?

I want to connect Matter device to the Apple homekit, but I do not find a guide to connect.
Please share with me any information about this. Thanks.

So should we get an update with our smart bulbs to be able to work with matter?

I'm also trying to avoid hubs as much as I can. I have a Eufy hub that works with my HomeKit and a Ring hub that does not.

I'm looking forward to the hardware companies going to Mater. I'm a bit worried that the new Eufy cameras did not come with HomeKit support.

Okay so is Matter something that existing products can adopt via software update? Or does this require new hardware and only accessible for new products going forward?

The one downside that I see is ... I really like hubs. They offer me the most stable and reliable communication with my devices. All the problems I've ever had were only with "hubless" (i.e. wifi) devices.
