How to Style Open Shelves

Показать описание
Are artfully arranged shelves nowhere to be found in your home? Mandi Gubler, DIY expert, is here to show you just how easy it is to style open shelves. One of the questions she gets asked most on her blog is how to style open shelving so that it doesn’t look cluttered and messy. She shares all of her best tips so that you can tackle this project in your own home. She is working in the kitchen with a cake stand, pitcher, plates, and berry baskets, but the tips will work for any room in your home. First of all, don’t be afraid to try this! A common misconception is that you need to install floating shelves to pull this off, but as you will see, an étagère (as Mandi describes is a fancy French word for an open shelf) requires a quick and power-tool-free assemble before you’ll be styling like a pro. Plus, you can move it to a different room if you want to rearrange later. These tips work for floating shelves, an étagère, or built in shelves. Let’s get started with empty shelves. Then collect items to display. One way to make your shelves look cohesive is to pick a color palette and stick to it. After working on your color palette, add pops of white to ground the shelf. A white dish set can be stacked and is classic enough to use every day or be dressed up for formal occasions. They can’t have enough coffee mugs ready to go at Mandi’s house, so she’ll stack those on top. The items on the shelf should be similar in color tones, have a few natural elements, and be a combination of fluctuating heights, sizes, and textures. Now if you only follow one rule, let it be this one: Only display functional items otherwise the shelf will be overcrowded with clutter. Mandi displays items that she uses on a weekly if not daily basis; like these berry baskets and, and keep them on this prominent shelf. A galvanized tray is perfect for corralling a set of glasses and carafes, and makes it easy to carry over to the table for dinner or a party. The bottom shelves can hold larger and heavier items or ones that she doesn’t use every day, like these mixing bowls. On the upper shelves, she’ll keep stuff that she doesn’t want the kids to get into, like this vase and a ceramic cake stand. She’ll also keep a basket on this upper shelf to hide any knickknacks to be stashed and out of sight. These vintage metal baskets are a great balance of a vintage and functional find. She likes to toss cloth napkins in here to grab when we need them. They also make the perfect bread basket for family dinners! Play around and rearrange for balance: Think of the shelves as a grid, you can draw imaginary lines from the top of the étagère to the bottom. If it looks too heavy on one side or on one shelf, rearrange. Mandi will move items around as she doesn’t want it to look staged. Thanks for watching! We hope you learned something while you were here! Happy shopping!
