I’ve seen this first hand at my previous employer but even worse. My old supervisor was in the army reserves and was called into service for 12 -18 months (it’s been a while) and prior he was a role model employee and taught me everything I needed to know. But miraculously once he returned he was written up for being 1 minute late, being hounded and pushed to complete tasks that would normally take 2 to 3 times as long ect. And within a few weeks was terminated. Fortunately he did get a lawyer and was compensated until he got a job of equal pay and position.

CVS did that to my old great step aunt (rest in peace) because she had to take a month off for CANCER TREATMENTS.
They demoted her from head pharmacist and pharmacy manager to a cashier.
She fought them in court and won.

My sister sued over this because she requested FLMA off due to having to have surgery from a cancerous tumor. And was being coerced to resign. She won. And she won HUGE ❗

I got screwed by this. Got fired after my dad died. Told them "I'll be going overseas, and be out for 3 months helping my mom deal with everything.". My boss said "Don't even worry about it. Take whatever time you need." Got fired a week after I got back.

I was with a small company there were 5 total employee's. I got activated for a Hurricane duty in my home state. I was with National Guard. Gone 10 days, came back to "you're fired." The company said I was responsible for them incurring 4 k worth of fines and that was the reason for my termination. This company also made another employee, who was also in the National Guard take his two weeks of vacation while he was away at Annual training. It's not just FMLA that often gets the raw deal. Sometimes its the very people who serve and protect our communities and our Nation.
Know your rights, and your obligations under those rights.

I just walked into HR and asked when I could go on FMLA and they said anytime so I started it that day.
Before going to HR a supervisor informed me that I could not go on FMLA until I exhausted my personal leave balance. But HR said that was false, and that supervisor needs to stay in his own line of work and not try be HR. The HR rep also emailed the supervisor to notify him of his inaccuracies, and action would be taken against him if he did it again and next time just refer people directly to HR.

A man I worked with put in for leave because he needed a double hip replacement. He was a supervisor and had worked there for 40 years. He was out for about 2 and a half months. He was due to start work on a Monday. The Friday before, they notified him that they were letting him go because his position was being eliminated. In actuality, they had split his responsibilities between 2 other middle management employees. Btw, they notified him with a FedExed letter.

This happened to my Dad in 2008. He had back surgery on his spine, took medical leave(FMLA), was pressured by his boss into returning to work before his leave was up, was fired a month later. He contacted a good lawyer, sued the company, and won a big settlement.

my company did this. Thankfully they were good enough to "Fix" their "Computer" mistake. Went on FMLA when my son was born cause he had issues that needed 24/7 care, we had to watch him at all times or he could throw up and choke on it. Called to inform them when I was coming back to work and they informed me I was terminated for not turning in Proof of birth, even though I did it the day he and my wife were released from the hospital, 3 days after he was born (Requirement is within 7 days). Thankfully, The lady i had to call and talk to was actually the one that filed it for me and remembered turning in my paperwork. She was able to get it reversed.

I dated a girl in HR she told me they do this all the time, one guy had cancer and need 8 weeks for chemo and fired him a week after he got back, I asked her doesn't that bother you?? nope we already had him replaced, lesson learned never give your life to a company you mean nothing to them no matter how nice they seem

My now pregnant former foster daughter, 19, who was so sick in her 1st trimester that she was hospitalized 4 times was let go from her job without being fired: they simply kept reducing her hours, claiming it was "slow" until she was only getting 4 hours a week, then two schedules with no hours at all, nothing, but she was still on the schedule.
Slow? Retail before Xmas? Nope.
She spoke to her supervisor and the store owner and their response was, essentially, "You have missed a lot of work bc you were sick, and you are due in 4 months, so you are not reliable."
Assholes.
However, she has filed with Labour Relations and the person she is dealing with says that what her job did to her is definitely illegal and actionable.
Either side of the border, they can not screw you over for pregnancy or maternity leave.

I had a kidney transplant in 2020. I work at the hospital where I received the transplant. I had doctors orders written not to return for work for 3 months. I got heckled my HR and my boss constantly saying my fmla was exhausted and they weren’t gonna hold my position if I didn’t come back to work, even tho I was on short term disability. Every day I worry I’m going to loose my job

I can't even imagine what this country would be like if everyone just did their own job well and didn't screw over their own staff for profit. I was born in 77, so I haven't seen that yet.

My job denied me time to take care of my disabled husband after his surgery. They did this to many people. We paid for our daughter's wedding with the payout from the class-action suit.

Notice- You can get an FMLA for anxiety caused by your supervisor if they are doing things like writing you up for petty reasons or trying to harass you into quitting. Go see a mental health professional and tell them what is going on and they should be able to help you.

Don't forget to follow policies and procedures before and after your leave.

I sincerely wish I'd known these things back in 2009. I had a really good job as a unit secretary while pregnant with my daughter, and was supposed to be returned to the job after maternity leave. I was not. I was 21 and didn't know any better, but those people wrecked my life.

It's how they fired a friend who got sick at my workplace. Said she did not have enough time left for medical leave and kept writing her up for occurrences. I wish she had fought back.
