I'm purchasing a 124 soon. I have a Mazda 3 3rd gen and I love Mazda, and that's why I want the 124 over the Miata. Has Mazda interior and proven platform, with the highly praised 1.4t from fiat. My Mazda has the 2.0 skyactiv motor the Miata has, and it's nothing special with little room for easy-intermediate power upgrades. It's a reliable motor and sounds just good enough. But the fiat motor doesn't lose much reliability and has a ton more aftermarket and tuning support. Not to mention it sounds better than the 2.0. The 2.0 has a supercharger and turbo options now, but in the end you're only making 140-170hp to the wheels at a price of $5k-$8k for the respective kits available. All thanks to a 10:1 compression ratio from factory, you can really only push 5-7lbs of boost, as well, before detonation is a reasonable fear. I have a friend with a 500 abarth with about $3k-$5k in upgrades and she's pushing just under 260hp to the wheels. I also just generally like the fiata's styling over the nd Miata all day long.

Fiat has more power, limited slip diff, but for the difference I'd still get the Miata. Better reliability, better aftermarket support, and everything the Fiat has I can add to the Miata for less money. Ultimately, when it came to choosing a sport coupe I bought a lightly used Jaguar XK 5.0 for about the same price. A lot less actually.

The Fiat 124 Spyder has turbo lag & the bigger the turbo the more lag. Off the line the MX-5 has instant throttle response while that 124 power drops at 5000 rpms. Smooth power delivery for the MX-5 in every gear. Plus the MX-5 is more agile & 150 pounds lighter in soft top form !

I prefer the way the Miata looks (as odd as that might be, but the multi air 1.4l just speaks to my soul. Also the first is probably cheaper to make faster.

Not to hate on my own country but the fiat has a commodity engine, while the Mazda has a real sports engine, properly calibrated and tuned.
The 124 looks better tho

Id go for the Fiat, Lusso edition. I don't want it as a track car. Moreso as a grand tourer.
