SPACE STATION CREW DISCUSSES 20 YEARS OF OPERATIONS
Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 57 Commander Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) and Flight Engineers Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos and Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA discussed the accomplishments and research highlights of the complex Nov. 20 in a Facebook Live in-flight event marking the 20th anniversary of the launching of the station’s first component. On Nov. 20, 1998, the Russian Zarya module was launched on a Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan as the first element of the station, followed two weeks later with the launch of the first U.S. component, the Unity connecting node, that was carried into orbit aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on the STS-88 mission to inaugurate the assembly of the orbital outpost.
