General Motors has announced plans to phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its electric vehicles. The move will start with the upcoming 2024 Chevy Blazer and spread from there. Why is GM doing this? The answer is actually pretty simple...

00:00 GM ditches CarPlay and Android Auto
00:28 CarPlay and Android Auto are GOOD
01:06 Working with Alphabet
01:21 EVs will get their own Infotainment
01:34 Why are they doing this?
01:45 The real answer is money

Further confirmation that I won't and will not buy GM.

As someone who sells GM products, and just played with this system here in Canada. It is indeed a blatant cash grab.

Looks like my life-long dedication to GM is over. A good excuse to just buy a pre-computerized vehicle and have a friend install the necessary gadgets to allow me to use Apple Car Play. I’m the meantime, guess it’s time to find another auto company to shop.

Well, as a life long GM owner, I’ve definitely bought my last GM vehicle.

Thank you for addressing this. We need more people putting eyeballs on ridiculous moves companies make that hurt consumers. I currently have the Blazer EV SS on pre-order and phone projection is a huge factor in my vehicle purchasing decisions. Keeping my pre-order for now in case they decide to reverse this, but it's looking like I'm gonna have to look elsewhere.

these corporations forget that. it's the consumer's money. and the consumer needs to remember. these corporations are nothing without you. so if you the consumer see GM or any other automaker trying to take more from you please don't give up your rights to reject a bad deal based on corporate greed. that's all we have to do basic and simple ( DON'T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS ) thank you for such a fantastic review ( without silly interruption ads )

Best of all. The current car systems do work without phones and support carply and android auto. Really, they can do all 3

Wow this was a great video. Full of actual useful information. Without any ads or BS. Just right to the point. This is how all videos should be.
Nicely done Autotrader.

If GM thinks it will be able to get rid of Apple Car play and Android based users and go with their own non cell phone mirroring interface they are smelling sniffing diesel vapours. This is a step backwards not forwards. Cell phone innovations far out pace vehicle interface innovations. I drive a Honda. One of the many reasons I bought it was it has Apple CarPlay. I went to buy a second car, a Mazda. It did not have Apple CarPlay. The dealer begged me to buy it, but I said dot until Apple CarPlay was available. I asked him why at that time Mazda had no Apple CarPlay and he told me Mazda would have to pay Apple or Android based phones licensing to incorporate this into their cars. 2 years later Mazda sold cars with Apple CarPlay. I bought a Mazda. GM will reverse this decision. Just like BMW will reverse theirs and Vinfast has already reversed their battery leasing idea.

As soon as I heard about this I knew what was up, subscriptions for every car feature and various levels of feature subscriptions! The reason for CarPlay and android auto integration is for consumers to be able to use the device they use the most on a daily basis as seamlessly as possible without having to setup and configure another separate device and extra costs to the consumer! This has gone out the window and opens up a can of costly wormy worms for the consumer. I won’t be buying any GM vehicle or other brands if they don’t support CarPlay or android auto period!

One of the few good things about most cars (especially rentals) is that Android Auto on my cell phone works in them. I always bring my cable too because the maps/directions work better. I also play Napster music when I'm driving and since I already pay $120 per year for Napster I don't want to pay GM or any other car maker for another service. I'll keep my Honda Accord (2018) until I'm sure the next car with accommodate Android Auto.

No Apple Car Play? No GM in my garage. Sorry GM.

Wow! I currently have a 2024 Chevy on order right now. If this is actually true, f*ck GM. Because their current app system is garbage... like full on trash. And here in Canada, their app connectivity is 16 dollars a month, and if you want access to their map+, you need a $20 dollar a month subscriptions for 1GB of data. Some cellphone companies give you 20GB for $15 dollars, keep that in mind.

Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I always knew the Ultium platform was capable of 350kW charging, so when they said their Equinox was maxing out at 120kW, I had questions. Especially because the Koreans offer 350kW standard on their base models. This is a huge problem. I don't want to be worrying about my automaker purposely sending out error codes whenever they need an infusion of cash. And if they're willing to stoop this low as to retroactively remove features via OTA, then why wouldn't they send out error codes. I can't trust predatory companies.

This is an automatic deal breaker from buying any gm product.

I think this is a great idea. Bring back built-in navigation systems. They’ve always been more reliable. My Apple car play keeps disconnecting in the middle of driving.

Simply put, Oem infotainment cannot compete with apple carplay. Manufacturers that tried to charge subscription for CarPlay failed. I will not buy a car that does not have CarPlay. And millions will agree

Maybe I am just too old, but I will not buy a vehicle that I need to pay a subscription to use its features. If I spend the money to become the owner of the vehicle, then I own the features.

Facts...Your not over thinking it my brother. It's okay to earn a well deserved buck, but then there is greed, and that sir is where i have no patients, and draw line. I will most likely cancel my blazer EV reservation.

Subscription services are like voluntarily placing yourself into slavery. It particularly hurts when you remember just paying for what you needed and then owning it. My diabetes test strips were something that I could just go to Walmart and buy for about $10 bucks a month. Then they were no longer on the shelf. I asked the pharmacy when they would get them back in and they said they had them, but now they were a prescription item. I scratched my head. Ok. I went to my doctor and had him call in for my strips. When I went to pick them up my copay was $20. My copay was $20. This all didn't make sense to me. This was an item that retail was $10 just a few months earlier and over the counter. Greed was the motivation for the change. After that I could see that business had fallen in love with subscription services. No one wanted to sell anything fee simple, that mean you buy it you own it. Everything is going subscription. I have thousands of songs on my ipod that I have purchased over the years, but I can't open my iPhone with out seeing an ad for their music subscription service. I can't buy MS Office I need to have a subscription for it. All of this leads to a never ending indenture to the service provide with no hope of ever being free from them. What happens if your income is limited, fixed or non-existent because you are trying to live off your savings? Eventually, all this subscription stuff empoveracies a nation and its citizens have to accept a much lower standard of living. I just want to know how we can break businesses from this kind of thinking?
