The roads beginning M1 to M6 are based on their direction from London. So in general M1s are NE, M2s are East and SE, M3s south, M4s SW, M5s West; and M6s NW and North. M7s to M9s are in a similar pattern in Scotland depending on their position relative to Edinburgh and Glasgow. It's not always like that, but it's a pretty good indicator of where a motorway is. The same rules generally apply to A- and B-roads too, but they're a bit more scattered.

There should have also been an M7 in Scotland but The A7 isn't considered worth replacing with a motorway hence there's why no M7.
Most Motorways run alongside or close to an A Road with the same number A6/M6)
The A Roads were all there with their number before and then when they built the Motorway that’s runs alongside they just call it M and whatever number the A Road is/was..

In fairness to us English, the Greek goddess is spelt Nikē, pronounced Neek-ay. So in the spelling Nike, the English actually pronounce it correctly, Americans just do a hybrid of them both
