As a person that came to New Mexico sort of accidentally and ended up living here, I can attest that his experience is not uncommon. I had a similar transformative experience when I first showed up with $50 in my pocket and no prospects . I've seen it many times now. It's just a thing that happens sometimes here. I've been here nearly a quarter of my life, and even when you get used to the energy here it's singularly invigorating. Life does not become mundane in New Mexico.

This scene captures something ethereal, elusive and seminal about New Mexico, a rite of passage that many people encounter when they arrive. The film is a masterwork; it and John Nichols' "The Milagro Beanfield War" are the only two films I know of that really capture the magical wonder of Northern New Mexico.

PS Please don't move here it's awful, really. Denver is great, move there.

Just loved this scene as others did.   I think it's a combination of his inarticulate, voluble reaction to the overwhelming beauty all around, and her calm, patient, full attention to the person in front of her -- she's used to putting people first and the tasks she has to accomplish second.   Says so much about each of these characters and their respective lives.  So well done.
