Ryobi P601 Trim Router 18V One+ Review

There's much satisfaction from running a trim router around a finished piece of wood. Even better, using the Ryobi P601 trim router, you can do it without the cord wrapping around you. The Home Depot #sponsored has the P601 for just $69, sans battery and charger.
You get a single-speed router that turns 29,000 RPM and accepts standard 1/4" collets. An LED work light shines from the base onto your workpiece. Adjusting the depth of the Ryobi P601 trim router is simple and fast, and there's also a micro-adjustment.
We tested the P601 on some oak, pine, and poplar, using round-over and straight (plunge) bits.
The price for the bare tool is just $69 from the Home Depot. If you don't already have an 18V One+ battery, then you can purchase a 2Ah battery and charger for just $59. You're still all-in for under $130, and you get a 3-year warranty as well.

I am very familiar with most Ryobi tools and I own the router you are reviewing in this video. I actually used to think Ryobi tools were all underpowered and overrated. Until I stopped using 1.5AH and 2.0AH batteries. Invest in some 4AH or even 3AH batteries and I promise that you will have an entirely different tool in your hand. This trim router is capable of a lot more than you give it credit for. Give it a try. Better yet, all of your subscribers and viewers should invest in some higher capacity batteries if they own some Ryobi ONE+ cordless tools. That makes all the difference. By the way, I do own some DeWalt, Milwaukee and Ridgid cordless tools, and even some Bauer and Hercules from Harbor Freight. I'm not suggesting that Ryobi is better or even as good as the upper tier cordless tools but it is superior to anything Harbor Freight has to offer for nearly the same price. Plus the bonus of having so many tools that use the same battery platform with multiple amp hour choices. I am not trying to do a commercial for Ryobi. Just giving credit where credit is due. BTW, I enjoy your videos.

I have the same router myself. It does round overs and very light work well. The problem I have with it is that mounting collet is very short so most straight flute router bits simple are too long. What also happens is because the collet is only gripping the very bottom of the shank, it doesn't give as good of a support as I'd like it to

Thanks for the review. I got it today (HD on-line) for $59 including a 15 bit set.

I got mine 2 Christmases ago. Need a bigger battery for mine, the 1.4Ah doesn't last. I made 1 and half shallow passes on cheap pine and it died out. Other than that it easy to use and set up.

Can I route out a cavity with a trim bit? Or only trim?

Great video, thanks! One thing that wasn't focused on much was changing out bits so I have a question. I think I'm losing my mind but when putting my collet into the shaft, it only slide down about half way with half of it sticking out. I then try to screw on the metal housing and when I screw it all the way down, the collet is at the very top of the shaft. This doesn't allow me to insert my router bit, I'm super confused and must be doing something incorrect. My collet only has, maybe, a 10mm opening so not sure how the shank of the router bit is supposed to fit down in it. Can anyone help? There are not close up videos that show swapping out bits, that would be a great quick tutorial.

I'm perplexed as to how to be precise in adjusting the depth. How do you do 3/8 if its not on the dial?

Has anyone else had a problem with the router drifting down on the depth while using it?

If I want a router specifically for grooves in the middle of wood, does ryobi make a router for that in the one+ lineup?

Great review, thank you !!!, I'm in the process of buying one of this little marvels. So do you think that the new Milwaukee trim router will worth it? it will be release till October as you may know.

I wish RYOBI had one with a variable speed, I need one for chamfering or rounding over HDPE sheets.
