WFTY (now WDCW) (then-Ind. - Washington D.C.) Ad Breaks (Mon. 5/29/1989)

From a rerun of a regular episode of Columbo (disguised as the "8:00 Movie"). Some true late-80's UHF goodness here...except that some of the ads were run repeatedly. This posting would be a LOT longer had I retained the redundant ads--even then, some of the ones here FEEL redundant, but are slight variations on other ads for the same thing (see the talk radio station ad).

This aired over Washington D.C. then-independent WFTY (now WDCW) on Memorial Day, 1989 between 8 and 10 P.M.

I'd forgotten about some of the things they used to sell to my grandparents' generation, like the Contour chair, Craftmatic beds, and 100 Hymns records (complete with a book with all the words to the hymns; if only there were a word for that).

Okay. What the crap is up with that Flash Fox? If there was ever an Archivism hiding in these old VHS, it's that. He sounds like a mix between the Happy Hamster and Senor Cardgage from Homestar Runner.

"If you like musih, mah, an' commers, you'll LOVE my plumber reading game. Sign up tudday at yer nerst Fahfaksconwnypumbic Librarar."

Let's have some fun with this with the local ads.

WRC AM - Now the Team 980
Salem Furniture - Long since gone

Crystal Ford - Yup, gone too
Peoples Drug - Hey guess what, gone too!
Kemper Open - Also a thing of the past
WJFK FM - Now ANOTHER sports talk station 106.7 the Fan (also back then WJFK was the home of Don & Mike too)
Capitol VW/Subaru - What do you think?
WASH FM - Now a mix station

After the 15:57 ad for the 1-900 number, what do you think happened? I see a train in that girl's future.

I have to admit, I didn't know Washington, D.C. itself had dedicated TV stations. I would have assumed they'd be Virginia or Maryland-area stations that also served D.C.
