I'll never regret starting this series. I didn't really care how many episodes/chapters there were. It was all about the journey for me & along this journey, one thing I gathered is that Eiichiro Oda is a phenomenal Mangaka.

11:30 Actually, Oda said once that the reason he extended the East Blue saga and focused on every individual member of the crew despite his editor's objections was because in his words "You dont just suddenly decide to become a pirate".

For next episodes i would recommend inviting MrMorjMan. He has a phd for one piece and i think he would add a lot to the discussion

I originally hated how long this anime was and never wanted to watch it but I’m now 600+ episodes in and it’s now one of my favorites

I feel the main thing that One Piece gets right is that the Straw Hat crew truly feel like they belong together. They truly feel like family. That's incredibly hard to nail, but their chemistry is insane.

I don't believe Luffy's laugh was either unawareness of the severity of the situation or arrogance. I believe he knew he was probably about to die and had accepted it, grateful for the time he spent with his friends and content that he kept striving toward his goal until the end. I am currently at the beginning of the Zou arc in the anime, and love how much everything grows throughout. @bonzaipop Grant, I think you may find the kind of purpose and inspiration that this show has given me during the past year that I have been binging it from the beginning. It is truly a masterpiece of storytelling, and I believe it deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest anime of all time (though I am in love with it).

Not kidding! I finally started watching One Piece just two weeks back and have only finished the East Blue arc so far and now I saw a notification for this video. Things couldn't have been turned out better than this XD

The worst part about One Piece:

Catching up

In my case: it was a magical experience watching 850 episodes non-stop

The East Blue saga has a really nostalgic feel to it, since the very beggining makes you care for the characters in a really close way

My favorite part of one piece, is when you realize how far the crew has come. It starts with a 17 year old kid on a small boat with no direction. To where he’s taken down god level enemies, saved countries, become enemy number one of the governments, and has a whole fleet. Mind blowing! And I’ve taken this jo urney too from 10 years old to 26. It truly is a journey that you don’t realize because it’s so suttle. It truly is long term story telling at it’s best. The thing is it needs to be long, because every little detail, and person matters. And the world is just amazing.

Oda said One Piece is about 80% done... just doesn't feel enough after so many years...

Mugiwaras are my family at this point.

I'm so sad this is the only One Piece video that came out, this first episode is so good. I hope it's continued one day

One of my favorite quotes from East Blue: "Inherited will, a man's dream, and the flow of time. As long as man continues to seek out the answer to freedom, these things shall never be stopped."- Gol D. Roger. Dragon remembers these words as Luffy sails to Grand Line.
Also does the barrel breaking scene count as East Blue arc? You should include that next as the theme of following one's dreams is big in One Piece.

Also I recommend Mr Morj to join you

Cutting from Shanks handing the hat off to Luffy directly to Luffy having Nami hold onto it while he goes to cement his place in the world really slapped me in the face with why I love the latter scene so freaking much.

I didn't feel the impact of reading/watching One Piece until I Reread and Rewatched multiple times with friends that didn't know about One Piece and catching up on the story with them. Ever since then, One Piece became a part of my life.

Oda has a way to make you feel in every arc and in every impactful moment in the story, I've never once regretted starting this journey.

As for Grant's question, I believe Luffy to be a Happy-go-Lucky selfless character. At that moment when he was about to die, he must have been thinking around the lines of "It was a fun journey while it lasted.". Luffy is the kind of guy that will drop everything he's doing just to save a Friend and take things in Stride when meeting his end, just like Roger when he died.

As for who I like to seeI'll like to see Zaidan The Intern on here, he'll make for a great guest for an arc.

So answering question:
Yes Luffy was just smiling at his own death.
It wasn't exactly fate that saved him. Learn about Luffy's family later on for that answer. Same thing sorta happens for another kid in a backstory way later.
