In backpacking we had a saying, "One pound on the foot is equal to five pounds on the back." So what's this got to do with fat tire biking? How much do wide rim/fat tires weigh? And since an object at rest tends to stay at rest how much energy does it take to get them rolling? Now add in the resistance of deeper snow. And we are going to offset all this by spending thousands on a lighter carbon fiber frame? Another minor quibble, the outfit you are wearing will keep you warm on a mild winter day as long as you keep moving. Sprain an ankle, break a leg, and you will freeze to death in a few hours once you stop moving, particularly if the temp drops as it almost always does as the day grows old. So you might want to carry warmer clothes and survival gear when you venture out in the snow on your fat tire bike.

I like my Devinci Minus. Installed 27.5x3.8 tires, and it handles the work commute well in snow less than six inches. If cars have packed the snow on the roads(no plowing all day long), I've gotta have studded tires. Otherwise no traction. Studded, is a realistic wallet buster. Much like fancy, unnecessary winter bike apparel. Very fluffy snow, the bike handles fine. Sleet and anything much over six inches, becomes a lung-buster, whether pedaling or walking the rig. Fat bikes are fun. And fat bikes do have a gluttony of negatives.

One thing I didn’t know about fat bikes before I bought mine, is how much fun they are in the summer. I bought mine for winter but I use it all year round despite the fact that I also own an EMTB.

Been a bit since you posted this, but what are the brands/etc of the upper body clothing you are wearing? I must’ve missed it in the video

Great tutorial.
Thanks for bringing up the cost fairly early in the video, so I could tell right away that it's a hobby that I unfortunately can't afford. I was hoping to maybe get into this a little cheaper for a beginner. I don't have thousands to spend on a bike and high tech clothing.
Looks like it's a blast though.
Have fun!

Never saw a helmet like that before. What tire pressure range I should be running would have been helpful.

I was told by a bike shop that fat bikes were an old fad and they were to hard to pedal!
