Swoop Orders the 737 MAX

Last week, Canada’s Swoop Airlines announced an order for 6 Boeing 737 MAX 8s. They currently operate 10 737-800s that were transferred to them from WestJet, and this would bring their fleet to 16 aircraft total.

Today, I take a quick look at this order, and why it might cause a bit of a stir.

Swoop is basically just a scheme to push Flair out of the market. Almost all their new routes anouncements are routes already flown by Flair, and they fly on the same frequencies and days as Flair, even on 2x weekly flights... As soon as Flair enters a new market, Swoop announces the same route a few weeks later.. They raise their prices significantly on routes Flair doesn't fly, instead of making cheap air travel available for everyone like they pretend to. It's quite sad to see tbh.

The LCC and ULCC scene in Canada is very interesting these days. Very curious to see how the carriers evolve as more enter the market. Given Swoop's rocky relationship with WestJet, it will be interesting to see how everything plays out. More and more competition in on the way with Lynx and Porter too and my gut is telling me Porter will end up dominating the Atlantic market. Another thought I have is whether Lynx will end up merging with another carrier...

The Pilot issue was that WJ wanted (and to a point got) a pay scale and work conditions for the same aircraft with now more people flying same routes (or very similar) for less pay (way less), in Canada our pay scales (AC, WJ, SW, AT) are jokes compared to the US or EU

The Max is being introduced to open routes from Western Canada to the Eastern Caribbean. Think Edmonton to Punta Cana for example. The NG cannot operate this route non-stop during winter, while the Max can for the same cabin configuration. Interestingly, this also means that the fleet at Swoop will be identical to Sunwing. Flair is not the only target for this company.

lol, clever with the FlyFlair text on the Swoop MAX. I wondered why Swoop never ordered the MAX, but they aren’t a large airline, so it makes sense in that way. I’m going to assume you know about the Il-76 coming in later today, correct?

If westjet-swoop ever manage to put Flair out if business then swoop will be shut down and we'll be left paying even more exhorbitant prices on WJ and AC. Westjet is now charging $44 to $48 per seat for seat selection, Flair charges $16.50. So as a family of three we pay Flair $49.50 but for the same flight on westjet we pay $138. On a return ticket which we always buy thats $99 on Flair and a whopping $276 on the gouge airline westjet.

As a Calgarian and Canadian, I am super disappointed in the way Wesjet (Swoop) and Air Canada have been one of Boeing's strongest supporters, particularly the 737MAX and 787 Dreamliner during their ongoing problems! Boeing has shown such contempt for Canada and its own aircraft industry. If there were no other choices it would be different but there are!
Also if a company is prepared to screw their employees you know they will be prepared to do the same to their customers!

I don't value my time as much as others do so I find Swoop a decent LCC. There's something odd feeling about flying across the nation for 1/7th the cost when compared to driving at 1/15 the travel time.

Swoop is trying to catch up with Flair Airlines. Since Flair is a true ULCC and Swoop is a LCC, Swoop decided to get the Max's to compete with most of Flair's routes. Swoop fares are cheap but not as cheap compared to Flair since Swoop's 800 NG's can only do so much in terms of seat cost. Flair is getting 50 Max 8's along with the new efficient engines within a five year term and then another deal to get the Max 10's. Now Lynx will be added to the budget airline list within Canada. It's a good healthy competition which is much needed within the Canadian market. Looking forward to see what Porter, Flair, Lynx and Swoop can bring to the table.

Curious to see whether it was Westjet or Swoop who signed the contract with Boeing for those 6 737s. Boeing has no announcement on its web site for such sale, so I would assume they are getting aircraft either from a cancelled order or from a lessor as that would be only explanation for getting aircraft delivered in 30 minustes or it's free.
With regards to Westjet vs Swoop. They may have the same plane model, but it all depends on how the seating is arranged inside, whether Swooop has any type of galley capability to heat meals etc. If they put 29" seat pitch, only 1 toilet, limited galley, then the flight experience will be very difference from a Westjet flight.

But in the end, when mainlines try low cost carriers, it rarely works out. For Air Canada, Jazz was merged back into AC mainline (and Jazz name transfered to regional subsidiary), and unfortunatly, Jazz seatig/services moved to AC mainline. Rouge still exist, but now undifferentiated from coach on mainline.

I don't get WestJet & Air Canada with these different names being part of the same airlines, Rouge, Swoop, Encore. I hope Flair airlines orders a bunch of A220's, E2's, Max's or MC21's to give the big boys more competition.

I think the business case is being mis-represented here. There is no "conflict" flying the same plane type or route. The passenger is able to choose the class of product (J, Prem Y, Y, basic Y) and the type of carrier they fly (Full, LC, ULCC) etc...
WJ is being smart by trying to nibble a little of the ULCC market and a little of the full service market at the same time. But since they are a private company we'll never know how it works out for them in terms of profit :)

I saw a Lynx airline 737 at Boeing field on BigJettv channel. Can anyone share when this new airline will hit the Canadian skies.
