For those wondering why he almost got fired: Due remember he did this unorthorized using company time and resources. Regardless of a good or bad outcome, that can be not only a breach of trust but a breach of contract as well. It's like if a friend stole money out of your wallet and invested it for you. Yes if you get returns on it you'll be happy but at the end of the day it doesn't change the fact they stole a thing of yours. Yes it's a fun Easter egg and did good in the end but they are a business and can't have employees doing whatever they please. It's a situation where you have to think logically and not emotionally.
