Good tips. You can also make a tapered arbor instead of threading. You can tap your part to be machined on to the arbor with a mallet until it locks, then tap it off when it's finished.

ER40 collet chuck with a big set of collets... Best thing I've bought for my lathe so far. No more damaged threads holding bolts.

A kink I’ve used several times is using an internal snap ring in the chuck grooves to square up short pieces during the clamping process. A cheap assortment from Harbor Freight will cover a bunch of different sizes of stock, and bigger sizes are available in well stocked hardware stores. Cheap and dirty. Just the way I like it! Lol

If you can't be bothered with an arbor my trick is to use a bolt which part of it has no threads, one nut at the back and two at the front does the trick.
