高徳院 (Kōtoku-in = temple of eminent virtue) is the Bhuddist temple in Kamakura that house one of the largest bronze Bhudda statues in Japan. Kamakura was for quite some time the seat of the military gourvernment.

As a Brit I can confirm, screwing over other equivelant societies (Napoleonic and Opium wars for instance) and forcing their submission was the entire strategy. As soon as someone looks like they'll threaten your steamroll you beat them up.

The Empire to end all empires was destroyed from within. Instead of pragmatic supression and exploitationist war goals the British Empire spent it's 75 years of decline in a seize of moral dilemma. People simply moved past the Age of Empires.

The last few decades were spent enforcing our new morals, such as supressing Spanish slave trading and defending peaceful countries such as Canada. The British people, now educated in spite of the rigid classism that underpinned imperial control, had their eyes opened to the horrors.

A drop to dilute the sea of evil that the early and mid empire was guilty of, too little too late.

After very strained but peaceful sucession of India and other teritories the others (Canada, Nigeria, Australia) were simply let go and the proverbial "old man of countries" slumped into apathy.

Still today the UK behaves like a sick old man, making decisions and going back on them immediately, sandwiched between the tinniest of political details and a culture of such encoded and implied communication that having a frank conversation seems almost impossible.
