Charles Dickens’s first daughter Mary, known as Mamie, was born in 1838 a few months after her aunt had died suddenly from an unknown cause in Dickens’s arms.
She was the closest to her father and was put in charge of running the house and family alongside her other aunt Georgina after her parents separated and she did not see her mother again while her father remained alive.
She never married – following her father’s advice that the gentleman she received a proposal from was unsuitable – but not following his suggestions for who was.
After his death she edited a three volume collection of his letters which artfully avoided mentioning her parents’ troubles and she wrote her memoirs and recollections of her life with her famous father.
Later, she took to drinking and became estranged from the rest of the family and lived for a while in a scandalous manner with a clergyman and his wife, before dying in her 59th year – the same age as her beloved father.
